Winter Skills Interest.

Hope everyone’s Christmas holidays are have started well. As we have had a lot of interest in the trips we have run so far this year, it would be really useful for me to have some indication of how many people would be interested in going on the winter skills trip, particularly how many people would like to go on any of the courses outlined below.

This trip is over three days 27th-30th of January, leaving on the evening of Thursday 27th of January, having three days on the hill Friday, Saturday and Sunday and coming back on evening of Sunday the 30th. I know this is a long way in advance but it would be really useful for me to have some indication of how many people want to go on this trip.

This year we will be running three courses, Introduction to Winter Hillwalking (covering the skills nesecary to walk in the Socttish mountains in winter), Introduction to Winter Mountanering (this course will look at advanced winter walking skills and easy winter climbing (grade 1 routes)), Introduction to winter climbing (this will cover winter climbing skills on harder routes (grade II and harder)).

Hello

First of all thanks to everyone who came on the Glencoe trip for making it such a great trip, particuar thanks to the other drivers.

The Sign up for the New Year Trip will be next week (at the Old Trip but please note that is next week (30th Nov), the social this week is at the Broadway Cafe tomorrow), but it would be really helpfull to have some indication of how many people want to go on the New Year Trip, so if everyone

 who wants to go could tell me then that would be great.

This year MPS are going to Fort William for a week over New Year, leaving on the 28th of December 2010, and coming back to Nottingham on the 4th of January 2011. This is one of the best trips of the year with the promise of winter climbing on the Ben, loads of good walking (such as the Grey Corries), Scrambling (Ring of Steall) and there is even the Annoach Mor ski center nearby. And if the weather stays like it was for the trip to Glencoe last weekend then there should be plenty of snow around.

As we are staying up for a week, we will be there ove New Year, which is always a good night out in the Fort. Also the accommodation we are staying in is really good and only a short walk from town. There is also a train station in Fort William, so if you cant make the full week then its realtivly easy to come up for part of it.

If everyone who want to come could get in touch with me then that would be great.

Glencoe trip spaces.

There are two spaces left on the MPS Glencoe trip this weekend leaving on Friday (19th) around 5.30 ish, getting two days on the hill in on Saturday and Sunday, then driving back on Sunday night getting back round midnight.

Glencoe is a great place, with brillitant walking and scrambling and if the weather stays as it is at the moment then there should be plenty of snow as well (Check out the high up webcams here http://www.glencoemountain.co.uk/webcams.html). Also we are staying just down the road from the Clachaig inn, which is an awesome pub with loads of whiskey.

The trip costs £45, that covers transport, accommodation and an evening meal on the Saturday.

Llanberis trip thanks and Ramsoc bonfire

Thanks to everyone who came on the Llanberis trip, everyone seams to have had a really good time.

Welcome to MPS Mountaineering.

We specialise in all aspects of mountaineering and hill walking, form Fell running, Summer and Winter Hill walking, Ice and Mixed climbing in the Scottish winter through to multipitch climbing and scrambling on Skye and beyond to the Alps. We mainly go to Scotland, though we have been known to visit other mountainous bits of Britain Wales and the Lake District and abroad members have been to the Alps, Pakistan and Peru.

Don’t worry if this all sounds a bit much for you, we’ve had members who’ve never been for a big walk before who have gone on to climb in the Alps. Throughout the first term we run weekend trips to Scotland and Wales, and then a whole week to look forward to in Fort William over New Year. Our socials are every Tuesday at pubs around Nottingham (see right side bar) and are a great chance to meet like minded people.

Monday-12-January-2009: Winter Skills

Dear All,

We’ve just finalised the Winter Skills Trip details.

This is an annual trip where we hire UIAA certified mountain guides to teach the essentials of how to walk and climb safely in the mountains in winter. It’s our biggest, most popular and most heavily subsidised trip of the year meaning that we can get loads of you out on the hill.

The basic run-down of the trip is: Thursday evening pickup & drive up, Friday and Saturday, Talisman Guides will take us into the Northern Corries of the Cairgorms. (see ukclimbing database). We'll also feed you on the Friday and Saturday evenings. Sunday we'll go out on the hill on our own to put our new skills into practise before driving home.

There are two levels of course available; Introductory Mountaineering and Introductory Climbing. These are suited to different levels of previous experience, although can be somewhat tailored to YOUR needs. We will try to group different levels of ability and have a beginners and improvers in separate teams. For example, if four experienced climbers sign up for the winter climbing and four novice climbers we will create a Beginners winter climbing and Improvers winter climbing. At the end of the day the guides will be happy to answer almost any questions you have, so you'll get out of it what you want to.

Intro Winter Mountaineering £85 (Winter Hillwalking Skills) for two Groups of six people. Course requirements: No previous experience required apart from summer hillwalking. Further details can be found on the Talisman Activites website.

Intro Winter Climbing £95 (Winter Mountaineering Skills) for two Groups of four people. Course requirements: A high standard of fitness together with previous winter skills and some outdoor summer climbing preferred. The ability to belay, quickly tie into a climbing harness using a figure of eight and familiarity with clove hitch knots when setting up belays is essential. Familiarity with using nuts and hexes in summer rock climbing is useful. Previous winter skills and the use of crampons and an ice axe when winter walking is also essential. Further details can be found on the Talisman Activities website.

If you think the prices seem high then can I draw you attention to this page on the guides website. Hiring the guides privately would cost you around twice as much as we are charging and that wouldn't include food/accommodation/transport.

Please check the Kit List, in particular for this trip you should have crampon compatible boots. Please bring your boots along if you are not sure whether they are suitable for crampons, (it is possible to hire boots whilst we are there for a small fee if you don't have any suitable). It is possible and normally the case that participants borrow technical equipment(axes/crampons/harnesses/helmets/etc etc) at no extra charge; you shouldn't feel that because you don't have the kit you can't come!

The Signup is on Tuesday 13th January at 8pm at the Johnson Arms. Please bring your money with you to guarantee your place (Cheque preferred, cash OK).

Finally, the first places on this trip will go to new members who have been on a trip so far this year. Sorry if this seems unfair to anyone but this decision was made in the interest of the progression of the club. If you're not one of those people then don't worry too much because a quick add-up of likely numbers tells me that this won't fill all the available spaces. There may also be some space available for people to come along and not participate in a course; you will, however, have to make your own plans of what to do, and we would expect you to have sufficient previous experience...

10th March 2008 - Entries are now open for the LAMM

You've probably heard LAMM mentioned several times over the year. If you haven't, have a look at the Meets Diary and the LAMM website for more information.

If you think you might want to enter, talk to me about it and I'll convince you that you definitely do! We had 3 MPS teams last year and it would be good to have at least the same again this year, if only for the company at the mid-camp!

10th March 2008 - Team MPS does the HPM

For those that don't know Vince, Hamish, Joe and I raced in the High Peak Marathon on Friday night.

Things went well but unfortunately Joe peaked a little too early and started to feel the pain on Derwent Edge. We limped over Bleaklow to Snake Pass where Joe got the bus back while the rest of finished the route over Kinder, Brown Knoll and Mam Tor to the finish. We still managed a time of just over 13 hours which we very pleased with.

The winners were Team Vasque North who got round in 9hrs 13mins. I don't think you can understand quite how impressive this until you've trudged over Bleaklow at 5am, upto your shins in mud! Maybe next year?

Some people were asking at the social last week about going to the Alps this summer so...

You might have noticed that we started an alps page on the website a while ago. This is a space for discussing ideas for an Alps trip. If you think you might want to come then feel free to edit away. There are also some links to some previous Alps discussions on that page which you might want to look at.

For people who haven't been before I strongly recommend trying to get on a Conville course. These are heavily subsidised courses where you will learn all the basic skills that you need to know for alpine mountaineering. They will cover techniques that such as crevasse rescue and moving together i.e. things that you wouldn't usually use for mountaineering in Scotland. They're really good courses that several people in the club have done in past.

You need apply for a course using the online application form here. They say the closing date is 18th April but I recommend sending it off as soon as possible. Before you do though make sure you talk to me or someone else in the club who's been to the Alps so we can advise you on what you should say on the form.


5th February 2008 - A Successful Winter Skills Trip

So even with all that snow and then all that wind we had a good few days away.

Have a look at (and add to) the meet report and make sure you look at the Munro Tally - it took so long to do! Check out the Talisman blog to see Gerard falling over (not drunk this time) and to read some criticism of my skiing abilities (!) and Mike has even made it onto Al Halewood's Blog.

Remember to come back! With all this snow and the freeze-thaw cycling we're getting, a good base is forming for good climbing conditions in Glencoe in 3 weeks time and maybe even in Torridon at Easter.

I'll be sending out the final details for the winter skills trip hopefully by tomorrow evening. Sorry that it'll be a bit last minute but I've been waiting on the guides and they've only just got back from holiday so things have got a bit delayed.

14th January 2008 - The Winter Skills Trip is now full

All the places on the winter skills trip are enow taken, if you're coming or if you're on the reserve list you should have had an email from me. I'll send out more information about the trip after exams but for now have a look at Grahame's Kit List to make sure you everything you need. It is very important that you have all these things.

On that note I know some of you don't have a headtorch. You don't need to spend loads of money on one: I've heard this one from alpkit.com is quite good and you can order it now for only £5.

The trip info sheet is now online, in-case you lost yours. We leave on Thursday 31st January.

4th January 2008 - Happy New Year!

As above, I hope you all had a good break and didn't do too much revision. If you didn't come to Fort William then you missed out on a very eventful week of walking, climbing and celebrations. Check out the meet report for some subtle hints of what we got up to.

You probably know by now but the next trip is the ever popular winter skills trip. Have a look at the Meets Diary for all the info or email me if you've got any questions. The sign-up is this Saturday 12th at 8.30pm. I'll send an email with full details about the trip once the su have told us how much they're willing to subsidise it.

The one you've all been waiting for: The Winter Skills trip is now fully organised. Check out the Meets Diary for the all the details.

If you've got any questions about the trip feel free to email me. There is some leeway in the courses so if there's something you particularly want to learn then let me know and we'll make sure it is covered.

Prices will be finalised after Christmas so keep an eye on the website and your email for them. The sign-up will be on the 12th January so make sure you put that in your diary now!

We're using Talisman guides again this year. They're just written their Christmas newsletter where we got a mention so have a look at that.

As mentioned in Chris' email, the signup for the New Years trip to Fort William will take place at the social this Tuesday in the Three Wheatsheaves. The trip cost will be £90 which includes transport, accommodation and all evening meals. There are only 9 places up for grabs so come early with payment if you're interested. 29th October 2007 - BMC Winter Essentials Lectures

Every year the BMC organise a series of lecture where they talk about the skills necessary to go out in the Mountains in winter, click here for full details. The nearest venue to us is in Mansfield where they'll be on Wednesday 14th November. We won't be organising an official club trip but if enough people are interested I'm sure we can persuade someone to drive a car.

It might sound a bit dull and we'd hope that you learn all of these kinds of things on club trips anyway, but you can never have enough information. So let me know by email (see the committee page) or at a social if you're interested and we'll see if we can get something organised. Tickets would be £5 each for us (or £3.50 if 10 or more want to come).

21st October 2007 - Munro Tally and the Lakes Trip

I've finally learnt how to put the Munro Tally on the website. This is a bit of a tradition that last years president Damo instigated where we add up all the munros that club members climb on club trips. So you can click here to have a look at what you did in Glen Lyon.

The next important date for your diaries is the Lake District trip, 2nd - 4th November. The sign up will be at the social this Tuesday (see right). We've only got a limited number of spaces so get there on time (and with some money) to secure your place. Mike has set the price for the weekend at £30 which will include your transport there, accommodation for two nights, and an evening meal on Saturday. 26th September 2007 - Welcome new members!

If you didn’t get a chance to talk to us at Fresher’s Fayre, or more likely you’ve forgotten everything we said then here’s a quick run-down on what’s coming up soon:

Next Tuesday, 2nd October, we’ll be holding our Welcome Social: We’ll be meeting at 7pm in Mooch on campus for a quick drink then at around 8pm we’ll head into the Portland building for a quick presentation on exactly what the club does and what we’ve got coming up over the next year if you’re still not sure. Afterwards we’ll have the sign up for the first trip, so try and get along if you want to come on that and then we’ll retire to Mooch again for a few more drinks.

The first trip is a weekend meet to Glen Lyon the weekend of 12th-14th October. The price for the weekend will be £42, which will cover the minibus up there, accommodation for the two nights in a really nice bunkhouse and an evening meal on Saturday night. Glen Lyon is a great area with several classic Munros to choose from: we went to the same place last year and it was so good we’ve decided to go again.

If you can’t make it on our first trip then don’t worry, all the meets for the year have already been booked so check out the Meets Diary for one when you’re free. In the meantime it would be great to see you at a social. We have them every Tuesday in different locations. The first few will be in Mooch because everyone should know where that is by now and then we’ll be venturing a little way off campus to some Good Pubs in Lenton. Check out the website (top right) for exactly where each week.

If you haven’t joined yet then don’t fear! Send me (Chris) an email or otherwise just come along to pub on a Tuesday.

President Chris broke the Ramsoc 38 mile "marathon" record, at the weekend, and Martin came in second. Quite an impressive achievment. It's good to show ramsoc what MPS are made of.

Those that didn't come to Glen Shiel, you missed out! We had bright, sunny and snowy Alpine days nearly every day. See the meet report and some photos here.

Did everyone get Vince's email about a climbing day the first weekend after the holiday? It is definately going to happen, we'll get it organised in the next couple of weeks and let you know costs and where the sign up will be.

If you haven't entered LAMM yet then why not? We've got a few MPS teams going but the more the merrier. For those that don't know what it is, it's basically a two day, self-sufficent race/big organised fast walk, where you and a partner have to navigate yourselves along a mountainous route that you are given at the start line. It's really fun, honest! Ask me: or look at the LAMM website.

If you want to run for committee, then you will need a member to propose you at the AGM - it does not have to be a committee member. Anyone who is an MP Ser? can propose you for committee.
You will also need to let Nick know what position you will run for and who is proposing you!

Susie Illingworth

The club was devastated to hear of the death of Susie last week in New Zealand. MPS had been a big feature in her university life, and she was still in touch with many of us after leaving the club. Our thoughts are with Andy and her parents.

Susie was on a solo 2 day trek in the Nelson Lakes National Park, in the north of South Island, New Zealand. There had been heavy rain and the streams were in flood. The route she had to take probably involved having to repeatedly cross flooded rivers. On one of these crossings, she must have slipped and fallen into the river. She drowned. Her rucksack was picked up 200m downstream. her body was discovered some time later by other trekkers, who informed the police.

The club is organising a tribute to be sent to her parents on behalf of MPS. If anyone has thoughts or photos that they would like passed on to her parents please contact Nick.

To those going on the winter skills course (who do not own their own crampons), there is a compulsary crampon fitting session at 1pm on Monday 30th January in the Expedition Stores near the Hallward Library and Halifax cash machine.
You will need to bring your walking/mountaineering boots along with you.
If you cannot attend, then please contact Nick as soon as possible so we can arrange a different time for you.

If you are unsure about any of your other gear, the CommitteeMembers will be there to answer any other question you may have.

Important: The Rescue and Emergency Care course dates have been changed and it is now due to run on Sat 12th and Sun 13th November. The plus side is that the trainers will now take you to the Peak District for the course so you get a bit more wilderness exposure. See Training Courses for more details.

All MPS members have a 20% discount day for clothing and equipment (Excludes maps, GPS and books) this coming Thursday 13th October at Cotswold Outdoor Store in Lenton Nottingham.

These discount days are an absolute bargain! If anyone needs any equipment advice contact the comittee or post on the mailing list and someone will help out.

Dear all, Well the MPS 2004-2005 season has ended, and it was a superb year as I am sure you will all agree. Thanks again to the 2004-2005 committee!
The weather from January onwards was fantastic and those on trips were rewarded with some incredible days out on the Munros.
Some stunning photos taken too!

Is anyone willing to have a look back at some of this year's meet reports and add to them? There are still a fair few with embarrasing chunks missing and it would be great to see them all finished off before the start of next term!

Crianlarich 1 has no meet report at all, Glen Etive, Winter Skills, Glencoe and Braemar are all unfinished. I have added a brief bullet-point report for Skye and Mull but can only really remember what walks (and bimbles) I did so please feel free to add to itl!
Rudolph has now added the last paragraph needed for a complete Steall Hut trip meet report!!
Please do have a look over these reports to see if there is anything you want to add - it's not supposed to be a chore! Any problems adding more pictures or adding text, then just let me know!

For both of these meet reports, there is still room for others to make contributions and tell us all about what they did.
This is indeed also true for the Winter Skills and Steall Hut trips!!
Most of the reports have been written, so please take a few moments just to jot down a small paragraph telling us what you got up to if nothing has been written in for any particular walk/climb you went on!

Just to let everyone know that all four of us (Nick, Milton, Adam and Paul) who entered the 26 mile Belvoir Challenge survived the course! The route was exceptionally tough this year with lots of mud and snow! My legs are ruined now - I'm still having trouble going down stairs! Anyway check out the final results here. Nick

I'm still in pain too (kinda starting to regret not doing any training....). It was 'great fun' tho. Congrats to Nick for coming 5th - a totally awesome performance for the club - showing just how good MPS really are!!!!!!! (Paul)

According to the medic down my corridor i now have 'Delayed reaction muscular stress' or something. We probably all have. Either way, great work Nick! You modestly going 'hmmmmm maybe top 10' fooled no-one. I'd like to see a mountaineer, rambler or 'explorer' even complete that course... scum. (Adam)

Adam, I think two people will be very keen to point out that this is DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness.

Paul, I think you'll find it's definately Delayed Onset Muscle Stiffness!

To celebrate the end of exams we'll be going on a campus bar crawl next tuesday (25th January). We'll start at 6-45pm in the Ark, and we'll then move on to Florence Boot Hall, arriving at 7-30pm. We'll then visit the bars in a clock-wise direction. If you're joining us en route, you can ring me to find out where we are: 07854565687.

We'll be doing the crawl Alpine style - we'll be roped up and dressed in our most dashing Mountain gear! There'll be prizes up for grabs for the person or persons who manage to stay roped up for the longest amount of time and for the best dressed mountaineer. If you prefer to keep your ropework for mountainsides only - come along to laugh at the rest of us!

The BMC (British Mountaineering Club) Winter Lecture Series 2004 comes to Nottingham University on Wednesday November 17th, 6.45pm-9pm! This will be both informative and inspiring - a must for anyone interested in winter mountaineering in Scotland or elsewhere. I know this is is a long way off, but if we pre-book tickets, it'll cost 2-50 each instead of 4. To book your place, bring money/a cheque to Tantra Bar or to the next pub meet (Canalhouse, 26th Oct), after which I'll make the booking.
