My role is to encourage safe mountaineering, whilst each member of the club is responsible for their own safety and that of the other members of their group, the committee, group leaders and the more experienced members of the club can provide useful advice. In particular I work closely with the Gear Sec to make sure everyone is properly equipped going out on to the hill.
We can help with route choice and planning, navigation, interpreting weather and local conditions forecasts as well as clothing and equipment choice, so if you are at all unsure please ask. For starters have a look at the recommended kit list.
The BMC now provides an excellent series of articles to help mountaineers with the specifics of choosing kit and improving their mountaincraft skills as well as loads on general advice. Go take a look.
To help with bad weather navigation here's my Timing and Pacing Chart as a Word document - you'll have to work out and enter your own pacings as the figures included are just 'average' values.
To help with planning ahead download the MPS route sheet and write up your route in advance. Gives you more time to talk up the route in the pub!!
To give you a clue of what I look like, I'm the one hiding behind the glasses and beard in this shot taken on the summit of Barre des Ecrins in the southern French Apls.
