This first trip of the year was supposed to be to Wales, but due to a double booking, we had to change last minute and go to the lake district. Luckily, Ivy cottage in Penruddock (El presidente's holiday home), was free this weekend. We plan to go to wales in 2 weeks time instead when the lakes would have been. Chris and Brannock did a great job of the driving - thanks to both. We were quite amused when Chris announced at Whetherby service station that the brakes didn't really work properly - at least at slow speeds they hadto be pumped! Also, when he collected the minibus, he hadto stamp on the throttle to make it work. We also noticed that one of the tyres was quite squishy (under inflated) and when we checked the others they all were. So we carried on driving safe in the knowledge that our minibus was in tip-top condition. We arrived about 10PM, and all were quite sleeping; since tired people aren't good at making conversation, we all turned in to bed quite early, to get a good nights sleep. Saturday - the sun shone all day for us, beautiful. Brannock and Alex climbed napes needle, and continued the route to the top of great gable. Greg lead a massive group (8) up a scramble on the same buttress, and then up westmorland crag to the top of the mountain. Ben took a group along Striding Edge.

Saturday night, I learnt that cooking spaggetti for 15 people is harder than it sounds. I learn 1stly, boil the water first. 2ndly, stir the spagetti or it sticks and burns. 3rdly, Don't every bother with spagetti, because it is impossible to stir, use pasta instead. 4thly, a typical potion of pasta is ~150g, not 200g; (multiply by 15 and that is a lot of leftover pasta)!!

Sunday, Brannock and Alex took Elliot, Henry and Jon climbing. Greg took Jack and Katie on a gill scramble... minor epic number 2: don't scramble when the river is in spate, especially when the rocks are wet and slippery, or somebody is guaranteed to fall in... enough said. Ask me in the pub, after a few beers if you want to know the rest! Luckily, we had enough spare clothes and plenty of good spirits (unfortunately not the alcoholic kind!). Ben and Ann-Kathrin lead a walk up sharp end on Blencathra, I hear this was a very nice day out from those who did it.

We all got off the hill in good time, and away by 4pm (Ann-Kathrin even mangaged to squeeze a fell run in). Mama-Mia's serves really good pizza in Lancaster, I recommend the hot n' spicy. However, the staff don't all seem to be the sharpest people around! We arrived in Nottingham at 9Pm, and everyone dropped off by 10pm .. cheers to a good trip I recon.

Greg
