A Bothy is a remote hut in the middle of the mountains left open for anyone to use. Facilites are minimal but locations are amazing!
This page is growing into a bothy guide, but fieldwork takes time. If a bothy isn't listed - then go and visit it and report back here! Eyewitness accounts only please, preferably photos.
Most open bothies are maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association. With any bothy, don't rely on it - take a tent or bivvi bag as an alternative, especially if it is an unknown quantity. Take all your rubbish with you and leave the bothy in a tidy state.
For more information on planning a bothy trip, talk to Grahame, Damian, or Franco. It's also a good idea to google the bothy and see what info you can find on it.
For a really cool website on Bothies, check out Mountain Bothyears. This website is devoted to the joys of Scotland's mountain bothies (or even to the singular bothy, bothan, howf or witever).
If no bothy is avaliable, why not dig a Snow Hole?
